A Ritual in Search of a Rock

Home movie footage taken by my father of Stonehenge and of hardened lava flows in Hawaii are stitched together with rituals and gestures I perform with rocks. One of these, an attempt to carry armfuls of heavy stones, is an exercise in futility, inspired by filmmaker Maya Deren’s 1930 film At Land. Other rituals involving wine, bread, and stones are based on ‘recipes’ and health advice written by the composer, philosopher and polymath Hildegard van Biren in the 2nd century.
