The common serviceberry tree is best adapted for hardiness zone 5—that is, it grows best in colder climates. As New York state warms, the common serviceberry has already started to suffer leaf loss in hot summers.

In hot and arid growing regions like Israel, agricultural netting is used to sheild crops from extreme sun. The use of it here is a gesture towards a possible future for cold-climate plants in the region.
